"It was horrible, an awful blow; I loved Jean deeply. I felt a sickening mixture of grief, guilt, and frustration because I hadn't been able to do what might have saved her: get her away rom her mother for an examination [Jean and her mother were Christian Scientists]. With proper treatment, the cerebral edema that killed her would never have developed in a twenty-six-year-old girl."

I love Myrna Loy, but she really got it wrong when it came to Jean Harlow's death. When Harlow was 15 or so, she came down with scarlet fever, which damaged her kidneys. Nearly a decade or later, Harlow had developed a drinking problem as a reaction to her overbearing mother and William Powell's reluctance to marry her. This drinking problem damaged her kidneys even more . . . to the point that it eventually affected her health. Although Mrs. Bello was a Christian Scientist, she paid lip service to the religion or treated it as a social club, for Harlow had been in and out of hospitals for various ailments over the years. When Harlow became fatally ill, no doctor or medical procedure could have saved her. There was no medical procedure that could have saved Harlow . . . not in 1937. Mrs. Bello may have been a pushy mother, but she was not responsible for Harlow's death.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4603100249483133100.post-82534660731543462952016-10-02T03:01:29.029-04:002016-10-02T03:01:29.029-04:00When Jean died suddenly in 1937, Myrna was devasta...When Jean died suddenly in 1937, Myrna was devastated. I think I first saw her in Libled Lady and I found her to be kind of loud. But after seeing her in nearly all of her later films I have come to like her and feel sorry for her - she had such a rough life. Mostly to see what stories she would share about her and William Powell together. It was because of her book, I learned about Jean Harlow. I've since watched a few of her movies. I really liked Harlow in Wives vs. Secretary and libeled Lady the most. Amandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14262599180045166496noreply@blogger.com
